FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING THERAPY

DO YOU HAVE INDIVIDUAL THERAPY OPENINGS RIGHT NOW?

II don't, and am not sure when I will. Clients tend to stay with me long-term and I don't get a lot of turnover. That said, if you are very interested in working with me, let me know by filling out a web contact form, and I can keep you on a waitlist while you look for other providers.

WHAT KINDS OF THERAPY DO YOU DO?

I consider myself an eclectic practitioner—not married to any particular therapy— but rely upon strategies from:

  • Person-Centered Therapy

  • Humanistic Therapy

  • Existential Therapy

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)

  • Developmental Needs Meeting Strategy

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

  • Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP)

  • Autistic-Centered Therapy

  • I also incorporate the most recent thinking from neurobiologists and other scientists who have studied how trauma impacts the nervous system.

HOW MUCH DOES THERAPY COST?

My usual fee is $175 per 55 minute session and $235 per 85 min session. Occasionally we may choose to do a longer "intensive" session in lieu of shorter, weekly meetings. Cost of intensives varies based on length of time, goals, and therapy modalities used.

I do maintain a limited number of sliding scale slots on my caseload at all times as well.

WHY AREN'T YOU IN-NETWORK WITH INSURANCE COMPANIES?

I am out of network with all insurance companies. However, upon request, I can provide a "superbill" that you can submit to your insurance company to seek any reimbursement for which you may be eligible. In order to do this, however, I have to assign a diagnosis. I also offer a service called Thrizer that can help you access your out of network benefits in a quicker, less costly way.

I choose not to participate on insurance panels so that I can focus as much as possible on your treatment, rather than on justifying it to insurance companies.

On a philosophical note: I don't think of therapy or mental health as medical and dislike participating in the medical model.

DO YOU OFFER PHONE CONSULTS BEFORE WE START WORKING TOGETHER?

I no longer offer free consults before booking a therapy session. I offered them for several years but recently stopped doing so because I did not find them adequate in assessing whether working together is likely to be a good fit.  Many of my clients find that they need longer, too, in order to gauge fit. I also find that a consult is generally not a good representation of how therapy is going to feel, as it is an entirely different genre of interaction—which makes it, for me and many clients, a confusing way to try to "feel out" doing therapeutic work together. For these reasons, I now start by scheduling a full length paid session with no further commitment. After that session, we decide together whether to schedule another session, and/or whether to make a plan to meet on an ongoing basis.

I HAD THERAPY AND HATED IT. CAN YOU HELP ME?

Therapy that is poor fit is often worse than no therapy at all. I will work with you to determine together if we are a good fit—if we aren't, I will refer you to someone who may be better positioned to help you. Many clients have had negative experiences in therapy but are able to find trust, hope, and healing with the right person.
